International Circulation:You referred to China’s hypertension problem as an epidemic. What kinds of treatments do you think are going to be important for the starting and ongoing treatment of China’s hypertension problem?
PROF BAILEY:Well, I think in China and the rest of the developing world clearly hypertension becomes the driving force, along with smoking, for a majority of the non-communicable disease epidemics that we see. With hypertension the treatments are relatively straight forward it seems: Limiting salt — but salt’s an incredibly important aspect of many diets. It’s difficult to do. Having the appropriate medications — in developing countries those medicines may not be available, either because of economic reasons or because of distribution. It may be that compliance is important — but, again, you have to be willing to take these medicines all the time, on a regular recurring basis — so that may be a struggle. It is true that if you look at broad populations, the UN resolutions, where for 1.20 dollars a day you can begin to think about treating large populations with generic medications if you have all of these things there — if patients wanted to take them, if they wanted to modify their lifestyle, if you could find a way of getting them there.
International Circulation:So, in some ways, this new treatment, where we wouldn’t have to keep up all these different variables, might be more palatable for developing countries?
PROF BAILEY:Yes. This is, again, difficult in developing countries, because you’re talking about technology. You’re talking about access to technology and certainly an opportunity for treatment of outlying, remote regions becomes difficult as well. But I think that we don’t know what that looks like.
  PROF BAILEY:
