  ESC主席Michel Komajda

International Circulation: I understand your presence at this meeting in China is part of a greater effort on the part of ESC. What avenues of co-operation is ESC exploring and why is that co-operation with China so important?
Prof Komajda: Because China is a country with a population of 1.3 billion people and I think we would make mutual gains by understanding better how patients with cardiovascular disease are treated in this country and to make comparisons with the European region so that we can see if there are major differences or not. If there are differences, why is that the case? Are the differences related to economics or other factors? I think it is a very interesting field of research that we should consider, particularly if you are looking at prevention, which is a major issue all over the globe. Nowadays, the so-called rich countries spend a fortune on sophisticated devices but when you look at very simple measures of good lifestyle or secondary prevention in those patients who have experienced myocardial infarction, the reality is that we are far from being in an optimal situation. I think there is a need for comparing what we are doing in the two geographic areas and it is good to collaborate to promote healthy life measures and prevention at large in Asia as well as in Europe. I do believe that we will need to create alliances particularly between Europe and China because we are each facing an epidemic of obesity and diabetes with the potential cardiovascular complications which we would expect to arise twenty years from now. It is on our mutual interest to have an in-depth collaboration in this respect.
